Editor’s Note: The last few days of quiet

Happy belated Thanksgiving to all my fellow Canadians. Having lived here for over seven years, (Canadian) Thanksgiving is a thing of the past. It’s barely a blip on my radar, though I know many who are here during this time head out to Blake’s or Cap’t Dons for roast turkey with all the fixings. Now that you can get pumpkin pie locally I feel like I can enjoy the crucial flavours of this holiday anytime.

Not unlike during the US version, this time of year typically signifies the start of the Canadian migration back to Banderas Bay. I’ve heard from more than one person up north that they’ve shoveled snow in the past week. I haven’t even put a blanket on my bed. I was in Costco last week, and I didn’t notice a surge in vitamin D deficient tourists yet, but I suspect that will change very soon.

Pam Thompson hosted her annual Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Wave cocktail event last week at San Javier Hospital in Marina, and if you missed it, she has another at Lujo Lifestyles on Calle Lazaro Cardenas in Bucerias on October 18. More details in these pages. She is also hosting a fashion show and brunch with La Sirena Reina at Bravos on October 28. Seats will go quick. Send Pam an email if you want to RSVP.

Many restaurants are opening their doors after a quick vacation and/or renovation. Every day I’m seeing notices about new spots to check out. Columnist extraordinaire AJ Freeman shares his finds with us weekly. Look for his column on the funkiest spots in town. There is no shortage of great places to dine and if you’re looking for something a little more unique check out the Vallarta-Nayarit Gastronomica events taking place this weekend. Visit vallartanayaritgastronomica.com for a complete list of events and participating restaurants and chefs.

The artisan markets are gearing up again. I’ll have a complete list with times and dates on all the major farmer’s markets around the bay in next week’s Vallarta Tribune. I think the only day without a dedicated market this season is Monday.

Lots of news and events and information coming in the next couple weeks. Take this moment, possibly the last until the end of April, to head out to your favourite spots for a ‘quieter’ experience.  I may just drive downtown and look for a parking spot, just for fun.
